2020 Gould Family Vineyard Riesling
Tasting notes:
While we're tending the new Riesling vines at the Cartograph Estate vineyard, waiting for them to start yielding fruit, we continue to source Riesling from interesting vineyards across Sonoma County. Gould Family Vineyard is indeed unique: It's planted in what used to be a hillside of boulders. There are huge piles of rocks everywhere that had to be removed just to get to some soil in which to plant vines.
Pretty lemon and lime notes are prominent on the nose with overtones of white pepper, honeycomb, dried hay and jasmine. As it ages, it's just starting to show a tiny bit of the classic Riesling aroma of petrol. On the palate there is more mouthwatering citrus. Maybe it's just the power of suggestion, but there's a wonderful chalky character to the wine that makes me think of those vines struggling to make it in that rocky, mineral-rich soil. This Riesling will gain palate weight as it ages but right now it dances across the tongue with a lingering finish. Dry. (Updated 8.31.24 - Alan)
