This is a wine for those who love a journey: My notes are almost nonsensical when I look back at them a mere 10 hours after tasting. It’s exciting to see all of these diametrically opposed things in a single bottle. On the nose, it’s herbal but also has a bright cherry note. There’s a peppery note that’s bouncing up against soft violets. Then you take a sip, and you get blackberry and dark cherry doing battle with an earthy loam on the back of the palate. It sounds chaotic, but in the end this is a wine that pulls many elements together for a wonderful balance and great aging potential. I suggest opening this a couple of hours before dinner — but have a glass while you’re cooking, and savor that incredible finish that just keeps turning corners and surprising you along the way.
